Mom straps baby in carseat, throws her out window to save her life

This narrative exemplifies a mother’s love — it is both profoundly heartbreaking and deeply touching.
21-year-old Shelby Ann Carter was in the process of creating a perfect family life. She and her boyfriend resided with her mother in Wyoming, Illinois. At the start of January 2017, the couple joyfully welcomed a lovely baby girl into their lives. Shelby was over the moon about becoming a mother.
Yet, her aspirations for the future would take a tragic turn. On January 30, 2017, the unimaginable occurred — leading to a devastating tragedy.
Shelby Carter found herself home alone with her newborn daughter when their house unexpectedly ignited.
The fire spread rapidly, and within moments, the home was engulfed in perilous smoke — leaving no chance for escape. Firefighters hurried to the blazing residence, but when they finally managed to control the flames, they stumbled upon a horrifying revelation on the second floor.
Shelby Carter tragically succumbed to smoke inhalation and passed away. She lost her life due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
However, amidst this heartbreaking event, the firefighters discovered something remarkable — it revealed the lengths a parent will go for her child.
Even in the most perilous situations, and with very little time to spare, Shelby managed to quickly secure her baby in the car seat.
This heroic mother had fastened her newborn daughter into a car seat and then dropped her from the second-floor window. With her final breath, she gave her life for her daughter’s safety.
When the firefighters located the infant, named Keana, they rushed her to the hospital, concerned that she might have been harmed by the smoke.
Fortunately, due to Shelby Carter’s swift actions and quick thinking, her daughter emerged completely unharmed.
“It’s truly remarkable that she could gather her thoughts to save her baby… I would call it nothing less than a miracle how it all turned out,” Chief Ed Foglesonger of the Wyoming-Speer Fire Protection District shared with The Washington Post.
The loss of Shelby Carter was a devastating blow to the residents of Wyoming, a tight-knit community of 1,400 people located about three hours southwest of Chicago.
After the disaster, the community began sharing information online to assist in reconstructing the home and offering financial aid to Shelby’s family.
Within a matter of weeks, their fundraising efforts amassed nearly $40,000.
