“We Want to Eat,” the twins beg the woman, and she sees that they have the birthmark of her late son.

A mother who has lost her son has lost the will to live because she thinks her life has no value without him. That is until she meets a set of twins ten years after her son died. They make her understand that God kept her alive for a reason.

Like she had done a million times before, Estella traced the writing inside the ring and cried. She shouldn’t have, could she? When a mother loses a child, her heart can never be at peace again.

Neil was Estella’s smart and talented son. He was a young scientist. He had done what his late father had done, and his eyes lit up when he talked about atoms and molecules, which Estella had no idea what he was talking about.

The only thing the single mom could do was smile at her son and tell him good things about his job. Neil attended conferences, art shows, and even events where the best scientists in the country got together to promote his state.

Estella was proud of how well he did in school, but she thought he might have been too busy with work to think about starting a family. Then she got a terrible phone call one day telling her that her son would never come back to her…

Things didn’t look like they were going to go badly that sunny morning. In fact, when her phone rang, she was singing a song and making breakfast in the kitchen.

The caller asked, “Am I talking to Neil’s mom?”

“Yes, how may I help you?” This is what Estella said as she dried her hands with a towel and held her phone to her right ear.

A person called and said, “This is for your son’s team, ma’am.” The death of a young scientist is a tragedy for our country, but we think it’s even worse for his family. We’re truly sorry for what took place.”

“Please know how sorry we are for your loss. “Your son is no longer with us.”

“Sorry for your loss,” Estella asked, confused. “Oh, no. Did the number not work? When my son left his hotel this morning, I talked to him.

“Sorry, Mrs. Townsend. We’re sorry to say that there was an accident and that your son died in it.

“Died?” Estella asked in an angry tone. “Do you really think I’ll fall for it?” You need to check your facts! Go to the hotel where my son stays! Okay, I’ll send you the address. You tell him that his mother sent you while he was going for a meeting! You’ll see that he’s still living. You have no right to say bad things about my child.

Love and care don’t go away, but pain does.
“Wednesday morning,” the other person said. “The funeral will be over in two days, and the invitation will be sent to you sooner.” We’re sorry for your loss, Mrs. Townsend. “Please be careful.”

Estella thought it was a bad dream that she would soon wake up from when the phone rang. It was a terrible nightmare, but it was actually real, and it broke Estella’s heart totally.

She didn’t want to live anymore when she saw her son’s pale face in the coffin that Wednesday. Why did God have to be so mean and take her son away? Not her son, but she should have been dead!

It had been days, weeks, and months, but nothing could make Estella’s heart feel better. When her family and friends told her they were sorry, she yelled at them. “Everyone is sick!” Do you get it? My son is still alive! He’s going to come back!”

After a year, she wasn’t mad at the people who said her son wouldn’t come back, and she was slowly beginning to see the truth. So, every night she would be by herself with Neil’s records and read the pages over and over again, thinking about how nice her boy was.

She might have done better to tell him to get married. He might still be living if he had a wife and kids instead of going on crazy research trips all year.

“Oh, my sweet little boy!” Estella cried as she looked at the ring again. Neil gave her that ring for her birthday last year. That beautiful silver piece had her letters “E. T.” on it.

That day made her so happy. Like taking off her wedding ring, she had never taken that ring off her finger.

“Why did you take my boy, leaving me here?” Estella asked God while she was crying. “You could have called me and let my son live.” So good and pure my boy had been.”

The next night, Estella cried herself to sleep. When the doorbell rang, it woke her up. The bell ringing was strange because no one had come to visit her. Never.

She quickly put on a sweater and ran downstairs, asking, “Who’s there?”

When Estella opened the door, a beautiful brunette was already there. She looked lovely.

“Yes, darling?” Estella asked in a sweet way.

Since her son died, she hadn’t talked to anyone with such kindness. What was going on with her?

“My name is Emily. The young woman asked, “Is this… Neil’s house?”

Estella got tears in her eyes. “Yes,” she answered in a low voice. “Yes, it is.”

She asked, “Can I see him?” and Estella couldn’t hold back her tears.

She told her, “You can’t meet him.” “Never.” “You need to go back.”

“What do you mean?” “Just—”

“He’s gone.” Okay, my son is dead and nothing can bring him back. You’ve found what you were looking for! Please leave me alone now.”

Estella lost interest in the girl and became angry with her. Emily was shocked and stood there like she had seen a ghost.

“He, what?” She let out a gasp. “No, no, no!” It’s not possible!”

“Well,” Estella said in a stiff voice. “Get off my land right now, or I’ll call the police!” Do you get it? GET OUT!”

Emily was talking when Estella slammed the door in her face. She didn’t even bother to listen to what Emily had to say. Estella didn’t care that Emily said sorry as she left the room. After Neil left, she didn’t care about anything. What did it matter if her son wasn’t there?

Estella’s day went on like this for the rest of the day. She never thought about Emily. But that girl would show up again ten years later, by chance.

After ten years…

“Oh, Lord! Boy, you need to be careful!” She gave the kid who had run into her at the market a mean look. It was the beginning of winter, and she had just bought a pretty scarf for herself.

The kid said, “I’m sorry!” and then turned around to look back. “Hey, Tim! He yelled, “Get up!” and then asked Estella, “Could you give us some money, ma’am?”

Her eyes were fixed on the boy’s neck. She asked, “Money?” “Kid, why would you ask people you don’t know for money? Is your family somewhere?”

The boy sat down on the sidewalk, and soon another boy who looked just like him joined him. The boy said, “Hi, my name is Jordan, and this is my twin brother Tim.” “We need to eat.” Could you help us?”

She told him to “go away!” “I’m not giving you any money!”

“Please! Please!” Both boys cried out loud and grabbed her arm.

The boys kept asking Estella for money even though she tried to push them away. She finally gave up and put some cash in the cup Tim was holding.

She said, “There you go!” in a stiff voice. “Now, out of my way!”

“You’re so kind!” He smiled and gave her a foot hug. “Thank you so much, ma’am!”

Afterwards Estella took a good look at Jordan’s neck and let out a gasp. “That birthmark…” She was so shocked that she put her hand to her lips. She asked, “How do you have that, boy?”

She got down on her knees in front of Jordan and asked, “May I see that mark on your neck?”

Estella was shocked when she carefully slid Jordan’s sweater down his neck after he nodded.

“Oh my God! That’s the same scar my son had!”

Jordan’s neck was looked at by Tim. He smiled and said, “Even I have it!” “Mom said it’s a special birthmark!”

She was shocked when she saw that these two boys at the market had the same scar as her late son. How did this happen?

When Estella looked more closely at the boys’ faces, she saw that they looked a bit like Neil. She had to find out what was going on. Essie would find out how these twins were connected to Neil if they were. She had an idea.

“Boys,” she told them. “How about some hot chocolate and buns?” There is a coffee shop across the street. “What do you think?”

“Yes!” We’d love it!” The two kids made noise.

She couldn’t take her eyes off of the boys while they ate their buns and drank hot chocolate.

She asked the boys, “So where are your parents?” and Tim gave her an answer. He spoke with his mouth full and said, “We live with Mom on the street!” “Oh, look! She loves you!” “Mom! Mom!”

“Tim?” If Estella heard a nice voice, she turned around and saw a woman in rags coming up to their table. Even though her face was wrinkled and old, Estella thought the poor woman looked pretty. The woman smiled, but her smile went away when she saw Estella.

She started to leave with the kids and told Estella she didn’t have to buy them food. But Estella did not let her.

She asked, “Do you mind if I talk to you?” “I need to ask you something, dear.”

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Townsend!” The woman quickly spoke while holding her boys in her arms. “I need to—”

“How do you know my name?” She slowly got to her feet and asked. “Do you know who I am?” Yes, I am sure you do!”

The woman’s shoulders sagged, and tears started to form around her eyes. “Are you sure you don’t know me? We’ve met before! Mrs. Townsend, my name is Emily. Does that sound familiar?”

As Estella looked at the woman in front of her, her eyes got very big with surprise. Emily looked so pretty back then!

“Emily? “Oh no, you came to see me!”

When Emily spoke, Estella was shocked by what she heard. Emily told him that she dated Neil when she was in college. They first met at a science conference at her school, which is how their relationship started.

After going out with Neil for six months, Emily found out she was pregnant. To tell him the good news, she was excited about being pregnant. But fate had other ideas. Neil suddenly stopped talking to her, which broke her heart.

Still, she thought he had a reason, so she asked some friends they both had for his home address and went to see him.

She found out Neil was dead when she did that.

Emily wasn’t sure if she should keep the baby or not. But she just couldn’t give up the two lives that were growing inside her. She quit college and did odd jobs to help pay for her kids’ needs. But life turned out to be harder than she thought it would be, and she and her kids ended up living on the streets.

“I felt so sad when I found out I have twins.” Emily told Estella, “I knew I couldn’t take care of them.” Afterward, I believed, ‘It’s something that Neil and I share. I couldn’t break down and give it away because it was a sign of our love. I didn’t mean to bother you, Mrs. Townsend. I knew Neil’s death was hard for you, and I knew my parents didn’t like the fact that I was pregnant. Not only did they not help me, they even kicked me out of the house.

“No, no…” Estella whispered and put her hand on Emily’s. “You should have come up to me, given me a hug, and told me you’re Neil’s mom.” I would have held you close, sweetheart, and I… you know what? It’s never too late. You and my grandchildren are mine. I couldn’t have asked God for more. “Please.”

Estella then gave Emily the ring that Neil had given her for her last birthday. “He would have asked you to marry him and given you a ring.” You’d be his wife and a part of our family. We tried, but the time wasn’t right. Let’s do it now. If you had married my Neil, you would have had the same letters as me, so please keep this. It’s yours by right.”

“You and your kids are going home with me.” I don’t have much to offer, but I can give you and my grandchildren a safe place to live. I now understand why God kept me living.
