BBC news presenter refuses to speak word during broadcast

BBC anchor Martine Croxall sparked debate after subtly refusing to say “pregnant people” during a live broadcast, choosing instead to say “women.” The veteran presenter, on air discussing heat-related health risks, corrected the teleprompter’s wording mid-sentence and signaled her disapproval with a glance.

Croxall later thanked supporters on social media, acknowledging she may face consequences for going off-script. The moment drew attention online, including praise from author J.K. Rowling.

The term “pregnant people” is often used to be inclusive of trans and non-binary individuals, but it remains controversial. Croxall has previously voiced strong views on gender, stating “sex is binary and immutable.”

The incident adds to the growing national and international debate over gendered language and inclusivity.
