Girl isses warning after doctors overlooked serious symptoms before she collapsed and ‘died’ in front of her classmates
A British youngster is asking others to pay heed to their own bodies after going into cardiac arrest while at school due to mild chest discomfort.’
Evelyn Walker, from Hertfordshire, UK, claims she was simply having a ‘typical morning’ in February of this year when her life as she knew it came to an end.
She reported getting up, eating breakfast, and heading to school with her companion, arriving at around 8:30 a.m.
“I felt good that morning.” Everything was fine until I began experiencing chest pains,” she remembered.
The 17-year-old ‘began feeling nauseous’ and ‘collapsed’ before she realized it.
“I have no memory of the event. I absolutely passed out. “I just remember waking up in the hospital a few days later,” she explained.
Evelyn only found out about the incident after it had occurred. After she fainted, staff immediately attempted CPR, with one instructor seizing the school’s on-site defibrillator.
Staff called the school’s medical officer, who shocked an unconscious Evelyn twice in an attempt to restart her heart.
Evelyn believes her heart stopped for five minutes before being stabilized and taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where she was placed in a three-day coma.
Her mother, Jennifer, described the incident as the ‘worst moment’ of her life, saying, “I was in bed sleeping, enjoying a lay-in when I heard my phone go and saw the word ‘ambulance’ on my phone.
“I just assumed Evelyn had banged her head or fallen down. The cops arrived on my porch, and I assumed she had died”. It was absolutely terrible.”
Jennifer supported her daughter, saying that ‘nothing like this had ever happened before’ because Evelyn was a ‘healthy, energetic young girl.’
Prior to her hospital admission, Evelyn observed that physicians were not aware of any significant warning signs.
The 17-year-old had previously experienced mild chest problems,’ which prompted her to visit the doctor.
However, she claimed that doctors simply dismissed her symptoms as physical signs of anxiety, never exploring her ailments..
Evelyn believes she may have had an underlying cardiac condition, with testing indicating that the teen’s heart may have irregularities.
However, the medical reason for her cardiac arrest is still being investigated.
“We still don’t know if that [the chest pains] was linked,” Evelyn told me. “I’m quite disappointed; they essentially dismissed it as nervousness due to my young age.” I’m sure if I were over 60 and complained of chest trouble, they would have looked into it more.”
After collapsing, Evelyn spent a month in the hospital before receiving an internal defibrillator to prevent future accidents.
Evelyn is now advising people to be aware of any symptoms they may have.
“My outlook on life has really changed,” she told me. “I thought I was young and healthy and nothing like this would ever happen to me…” Don’t just assume physicians are correct. You know your body better than anybody else, so if you suspect anything is wrong, don’t be reluctant to ask for an investigation. Heart disorders may impact anyone.”
Jennifer has started a Facebook group called ‘Young Hearts UK’ to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest in young people. She intends to inspire more people to get CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training.
“[Sudden cardiac arrest] is uncommon in young persons but not unheard of. In reality, 12 young individuals under the age of 35 die per week in the United Kingdom as a result of SCA. That’s why we want everyone to know CPR and where their nearest defibrillator is,” the mother explained.
