Tucson pizza shop sparks firestorm with controversial sign
A well-known pizza place in Tucson is sparking a social media frenzy with its latest marquee message, which has gone viral and is stirring up a lively discussion on legal matters.
”Isn’t anything personal..”
Provocative signs in eateries and shops have ignited discussions on social media since the dawn of the internet, and the trend continues unabated.
Recently, Rocco’s Little Chicago, a cherished establishment in Tucson, Arizona, famous for its deep-dish pizza, wings, and unique signage, is in the spotlight. This time, a straightforward yet striking message on their marquee has sparked a heated debate. “All law enforcement officials do not enter without a lawful search warrant.”
The sign, which has been displayed for a few months, has recently drawn criticism after circulating on social media. Owner Rocco DiGrazia emphasizes that it is not intended to be personal or anti-police, but rather a reaction to the growing number of unofficial visits from law enforcement. DiGrazia shared with 13 News, ‘This isn’t anything personal,’ and added, ‘We had seven officers in uniform dining here today, and I anticipate the same tomorrow.’
He noted that his father served for 33 years in the Chicago Police Department and that law enforcement has frequented the restaurant for over 26 years. ‘I developed a love for food from my Dad because COPS KNOW WHERE TO EAT. He would take me on long drives just to grab a sandwich.
When I see officers in the restaurant, it reassures me that we’re serving great food, and I’m happy to see them every day,’ DiGrazia expressed. So, what’s the reason behind the controversial sign? DiGrazia clarified that it addresses worries about uninvited visits from officers: ‘If someone arrives with a signed warrant and is conducting official police or law enforcement business, they are absolutely welcome.’ This message reflects signs distributed by local non-profits in response to heightened immigration enforcement.
Sparked outrage online
The sign has certainly caught people’s attention, igniting a wave of anger online, with some individuals pledging to boycott the restaurant, as reported by 13 News.
One user commented, “I refuse to support a business that doesn’t back our law enforcement. You should feel embarrassed. #boycottroccos.” Another added, “I won’t visit a place where law enforcement isn’t welcome!”
DiGrazia dismissed the backlash, referring to it as “low-hanging fruit” and something expected in today’s social media landscape. “It’s alright,” he stated. “I’ll engage with all these individuals, and it will either fade away or persist, but I believe the business will thrive.” He remains optimistic that the controversy won’t deter customers, noting, “What I offer is delicious food.”
Despite the criticism, DiGrazia mentions that law enforcement continues to visit the restaurant without any problems. “This sign has been up for two months. I haven’t noticed any decline in law enforcement dining here. They seem to get it.”
What are your thoughts? Do you see this as a straightforward position on individual rights, or could it be a controversial action that might drive a wedge between half of Tucson? We’d love to hear your opinions in the comments!
