Mia had always had a tight relationship with her mother. They supported one another when needed and shared their secrets, problems, and joys.
Mia’s mother contacted her daughter one day and informed her that she would be remodeling the house, something she occasionally did because she loved making small and large improvements to her property. She also advised Mia not to visit in the upcoming months.
Mia’s mother called less frequently throughout the course of the days, and even when she did, her voice sounded inappropriately aloof. Although Mia was too preoccupied with her job to notice that something wasn’t quite right, she assumed her mother was simply exhausted from the home improvements.
But Mia’s weird intuition that something was wrong was growing stronger and stronger until one day she found herself driving to her mother’s house.
When she arrived, she was met by a spectacle she had never seen before. The garden’s grass had become overgrown. Her mother, a huge flower and gardening aficionado, would never allow her garden to look like that.
Something punched Mia in the stomach. Was she running late? Was her mother in trouble?
As she hurried to the house, she saw that the door was unlocked, which was concerning because her mother never left the door open.
No signs of remodeling could be found inside. It was just as clean as before. No dust, no brushes, no paint colors.
When Mia called her mother’s name, no one answered. After that, she headed straight upstairs to her mother’s room. The most frail human creature she had ever seen was there. Although she was in bed, her mother didn’t look like the person she used to be.
Her crimson cheeks grew pale, her beautiful hair vanished, and she lacked the strength to leave the bed. Her lips were as dry as cracked parchment, making it difficult for her to speak, and she hardly managed to call Mia’s name.
“Oh, sweetheart. She said, “I didn’t want you to learn this way. Mia was taken aback. “What’s wrong, Mom?” she inquired.
“I have cancer.” I didn’t want to inform you that I had been getting chemotherapy for the past few months because I thought I could manage it on my own. You know, you put a lot of effort into getting promoted, and I…” she whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“I didn’t want you to see me like this because I was always your rock.”
Mia broke down in tears. She was devastated by her mother’s illness and felt bad for not going to see her sooner when she first had a hunch something wasn’t right.
However, she was unable to go back in time.
Assuring her that she was now present and that everything would be alright, Mia took her mother’s hand and held her in her arms. She never stopped telling her mother how much she meant to her and how she owed her identity. Her mother slid away as she repeatedly kissed her hands and forehead, telling her how much she loved her. She was gone in an instant.
Mia remained there for a while, sobbing uncontrollably and clinging to the warmth of her final embrace with her mother.
Despite our hectic schedules, this story serves as a reminder to always stay in touch with the people we love and care about and to follow our instincts if something doesn’t feel right.
