As Halloween draws near, people decorate their homes with scary things like ghosts, goblins, and graveyard scenes. Salena Webb, a mother of four from South Carolina, had a different kind of holiday this year.
Someone in Salena’s neighbourhood noticed her fancy garden show with the skeletons carrying the coffin. But it wasn’t admiration that made him come, it was a sincere desire.
His old father, who was just recently told he has lung cancer, thought the decorations were scary. Salesna’s neighbour asked her to take down the coffin because his dad liked to spend time in the shed with his back to her yard.
Salena felt sorry for the person. She knew that her decorations might make people upset, so she agreed to change her display.
@thatsnorthsense My family knows i loveeee Halloween and my decorations took me awhile to make and put up. I had just purshased the skeleton carrying the casket to go along with my graveyard to really set my halloween decor off this year🥴 I was a little sad at first but i thought about the bigger picture. Me removing my casket isnt hurting me at all but it may ease and bring my neighbor a little bit of peace as he adjusts to this news. Kindness is free and compassion goes a long way. Now what to replace it with🥴😩#Thatsnorthsense #dailyvlog #compassionforothers #halloween2023 #loveyourneighborasyourself ♬ Kindness Is Free! – Music with Michal
In a TikTok video that went popular, Salena talked about the event and her choice. “I didn’t want to remind him of what could happen if he doesn’t beat cancer,” she stated.
When Salena took down the coffin, she replaced it with badminton rackets, which made her skeletons look more fun. The scarier decorations were moved to her garden.
Salesna wrote in the caption, “I was a little sad, but kindness is free and compassion goes a long way.”

There was a huge reaction. People who saw Salena praised her kindness, saying things like “Being kind doesn’t cost anything.” “Thanks!” Also, “The world needs more people like you!”
Although they didn’t speak the same language, Salena’s neighbour thanked them by saying, “You’re good people.”
This small act of kindness is a powerful message that even during the holidays, being kind to others can have a big effect.
People are being moved to care about others by Salena’s story, which shows that the best ornaments are sometimes the ones that come from the heart.
