Anderson “Chase” Childers, 38, a former Georgia police officer and minor league baseball player, drowned Sunday off Pawleys Island, South Carolina, after heroically trying to rescue swimmers caught in a rip current, according to local police.

Originally from Kennesaw, Georgia, Childers served over three years with the Cobb County Police and was living in Paulding County. Before law enforcement, he played baseball at Georgia State and was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2009.
