A doctor has shared insights on what it signifies if you need to use the restroom shortly after eating.

As one TikTok doctor points out, if you often rush to the bathroom right after a meal, you’re definitely not the only one experiencing this.

So, what’s the explanation? This TikTok doctor clarifies that needing to go number two immediately after eating doesn’t mean your food is rapidly traveling through your digestive system. Instead, he describes it as the “gastrocolic reflex,” which occurs when you eat and then feel the urge to use the restroom.

The gastrocolic reflex explained

According to VeryWell Health, the gastrocolic reflex is a natural physiological response that triggers movement in your lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract after you eat.

This reflex is not a disease or medical issue; instead, it’s a normal bodily function that helps create space for more food in your GI tract following a meal.

Dr. Salhab elaborates, stating that when your stomach stretches, it sends signals to your brain, which then communicates with your colon.

As a result, your colon starts to contract to accommodate the new food, often leading to the urge to use the restroom shortly after eating. He adds that since your colon typically holds stool and water, what you expel is usually older digested food and water.

Increased Sensitivity of Reflexes

Individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) often experience an unusually sensitive gastrocolic reflex.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, IBS can lead to uncomfortable or painful abdominal issues, with common symptoms including constipation, diarrhea, gas, and bloating.

Dr. Salhab explains, “Some people experience severe abdominal pain, cramping, or even diarrhea after eating, as the contractions in the colon can be quite strong and intense.”

Fortunately, there are various strategies you can implement to alleviate your symptoms.

Dr. Salhab also recommends avoiding carbonated drinks, alcohol, some citrus fruits, and occasionally dairy, along with fried or fatty foods. In other words, it seems like you might have to skip out on some delicious options!
