Anyone who has ever been turned down for a job has undoubtedly wondered what made them unfit for the role. Was it your appearance, your lack of abilities, or something else entirely?
After being turned down for a job at TJ Maxx, 23-year-old Ash Putnam vented her anger on TikTok, where her video went viral.
Since then, her video has received tens of thousands of comments and over seven million views. Everyone in the comments seemed to agree on one point as the tattooed twentysomething pondered how young people could obtain entry-level employment.
On her popular TikTok, Putnam described how she applied for a job at a TJ Maxx and was rejected by an automated email “a few weeks” later.
“They only sent me an automated email because they couldn’t even call me.”
Putnam went to the business where she applied and challenged the staff because she was unhappy with the reaction.
“When I arrived today, I asked myself, ‘So what was the reason why I wasn’t hired?’” “Oh, you simply don’t have enough experience; there were candidates with more experience than you,” she said.
Since I am aware that many establishments dislike tattoos, I naturally asked her if it was related to mine. She said that wasn’t the cause; I don’t think that’s accurate, but I’ll leave it at that.
“I am not necessarily a bad worker just because I have tattoos. I have no idea what that means. “It’s true that some of the smartest people I’ve ever encountered have piercings and tattoos,” she added.

People on TikTok seems to agree on the reason why the Californian employee of Uber Eats was turned down, despite the fact that she never receives a direct response from TJ Maxx.
“It’s probably the tattoos, tattooer here.”
“This is the HR supervisor. No business would ever place you in front of TJ Maxx’s clientele.
“I used to work at TJ Maxx, and they will hire almost anyone who walks off the street because of their tattoos and body piercings.”
“I don’t believe your tattoos are the reason.Where do you have tattoos, I believe?
Putnam seemed to believe that it’s her tattoos as well.
She told the Daily Star, “I really believe it’s about my tattoos because it seems like a lot of people find them frightening and demonic.”
“That’s just a lot of the responses I’ve received on my video; TJ Maxx didn’t say anything to me. On my TikTok, people are being really hostile and stating that I should work at Halloween stores or a circus.
She feels that businesses should reconsider their employment practices, even if her body art was the reason she was turned down for a position at the store.
“They definitely need to reconsider if they believe that a person’s tattoos define their qualifications and professional skills. Colored hair, piercings, and tattoos are all acceptable. It demonstrates originality and inventiveness. People need to move past their dislike of tattoos in 2024.
